Coggeshall Lineage

I was unfamiliar with the Coggeshall name until I began researching my Arnold Family Lineage.  William Arnold, born in 1694 in Rhode Island, married Anna Coggeshall in 1718 – they were my 6th Great Grandparents.  Being of curious nature, I began researching my Coggeshall lineage and found a rich and interesting ancestry along the way.

According to The Coggeshalls in America, by Charles Pierce Coggeshall and Thellwell Russell Coggeshall, Boston, 1930, the Coggeshall name can be traced back to an English town of that name in Essex County.  According to Coggeshall and Coggeshall, “the name first appears as ‘Coggashael’ on a grant made during the reign of Edward the Confessor, who married the daughter of Godwin, favorite of Canute the Dane and apparently lord of the Manor of Coggashael.  The Manor and Abbey of Coggeshall are conspicuous in the early history of the town, the former having been its seat for generations.  Sixth in line of the abbots of Coggeshall was Ralph de Coggeshall, a learned and industrious monk.”

I came across several variations of the Coggeshall name – such as, Coxal, and Cogswell.  One of the more interesting Coggeshalls was Colonel William Turner Coggeshall who was known as “the man who saved Lincoln.”  More can be found about Colonel Coggeshall in a book by Freida Postle Koch entitled “Colonel Coggeshall:  The Man Who Saved Lincoln.”  Colonel Coggeshall was my 4th cousin.  He is also famous for the unusual name given to one of his children – Emancipation Proclamation Coggeshall.

The Coggeshalls in America also shows the Coggeshall Arms associated with this family:

My direct line begins with William Coggeshall, who I believe was born in England about 1520, during the reign of Henry VIII.  I haven’t found much information about William, except the he was the father of my 12th Great Grandfather, John Coggeshall.

JOHN COGGESHALL, GENT., the son of William Coggeshall, was born in 1549 in Halstead, Essex, England.  He married (1) Elizabeth.  He married (2) Katherine in 1564.   He died on 1 January 1600 in Halstead, and is buried in the St. Andrew Churchyard, Halstead, Essex, England.

  3. John “the Younger” COGGESHALL, born 25 July 1576, in Halstead, Essex, England.  He married Anne Butter who was born in 1583 in Dedham, Essex, England.

JOHN “THE YOUNGER” COGGESHALL, was born 25 July 1576, between the hours of midnight and 1:00 am, in Halstead, Essex, England.  He married Anne Butter, daughter of Pierce and Edith (Skinner) Butter.  Anne was born in 1583 in Dedham, Essex, England, and died before 10 November 1648 at Castle Hedingham, Halstead, Essex, England.  Anne is buried at St. Nicholas Churchyard, Castle Hedingham, Essex, England.

John was called “the Younger,” to distinguish him from his half-brother John “the Elder.”

JOHN COGGESHALL, SR., born about 1604 in England was the first of my line (my 10th Great Grandfather) to travel to America, arriving in Boston, Massachusetts aboard the ship “Lyon” with his wife (Mary) and three children, on 16 September 1632.  On 6 November 1632, John was admitted a freeman in Roxbury, Massachusetts.  In 1634, John moved to Boston where he became a mercer (a silk merchant).

In 1637, John supported Anne Hutchinson’s religious beliefs in the separation of church and state.  Anne defied the Puritan norm by taking on roles that were reserved for men.  Because of his support for Anne Hutchinson, John, Anne Hutchinson, and 58 of her followers were banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony.  The removed to what is now Rhode Island where, in 1647, John Coggeshall was elected the first Colonial President (Governor) of Rhode Island.  According to History of the state of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, published by the American Historical Society in 1920, “While in this office, he was the founder or was largely influential in founding two cities, two states and two separate and independent governments.”
