Porter Lineage

PREFACE
This account of the ancestry of Hannah Porter is based on the Porter Genealogy recorded on page 753 in the History of Ancient Windsor, Connecticut, by Henry R. Stiles, M.D.  The date of her marriage to (Deacon) John Coleman is recorded on page 6 of The Descendants of John Porter of Windsor, Conn. 1635-9, by Henry Porter Andrews.  The manner of her death is recorded on pages 175-178 in the History of Hadley, by Sylvester Judd.  

LINEAGE
JOHN PORTER was born about 1510 in Felsted, Essex, England, and died in that place in 1540.  He married Agnes Luscombe in 1540 in Felsted, Essex, England.  They had one child.  She was born in 1512 in Felsted, Essex, England, and died in England.
CHILDREN
1.     Thomas Porter was born abt 1540 in Felsted, Essex, England, died 20 December 1614, married Anne Calvert in 1559.
THOMAS PORTER was born abt 1540 in Felsted, Essex, England, and died in Little Baddow, Essex, England.  He married Anne Calvert in 1559 in Felsted, Essex, England.  She was born in 1542 in Felsted, Essex, England, the daughter of John Calvert and Dorothy Leonard.  She was buried in the St. Mary Virgin Churchyard, Little Baddow, Essex, England. 
CHILDREN
1.     John Porter was born about 1560 in Felsted, Essex, England, and died in Comessary Cart, London, Essex, England on 26 November 1625.  He married Sybil Vessey on 12 September 1587 in Little Baddow, Essex, England.

    1.  Frances Porter was born on 12 September 1585 in England.
    2.  Thomas Porter was born in 1590 in England.
    3.  Margaret Porter was born in 1593 in England.
    4.  John Porter, Sr. was born on 21 June 1594 in Felsted, Essex, England, and died on 22 April 1648 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut.          He married Anna Roseanna “Rose” White on 18 October 1620 in Messing, Essex, England.
    5.  William Porter was born in 1596 in England.
    6.  Rose Porter was born in 1598 in England.
JOHN PORTER, SR. was born 21 June 1594 in Felsted, Essex, England, and was buried on 22 April 1648 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut.  He married Anna Roseanna “Rose” White on 18 October 1620 in Messing, Essex, England.  She was born on 13 July 1600 in Shalford, Essex, England and died 20 days after her husband, in Windsor.
John Porter was one of the first settlers in Windsor – appearing on a committee in 1637.  He held various public offices, and was a prominent man in both Town and the colony.  He left a large estate, and his will is published in Trumbull’s Colonial Records of Connecticut.

  1. John Porter was born on 9 February 1622 in Felsted, Essex, England, died 2 August 1688 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut.  He married Mary Stanley in 1650 in Hartford, Connecticut.  John arrived in Connecticut aboard the ship “Planter” in 1635.  She died 13 September 1688.
  2. Anna Porter was born 1624 in England, and died in 1654.  She married William Gaylord.  They were married on 14 February 1644.
  3. Samuel Porter was born 1626 in England.  He married Hannah Stanley about 1659 and resided in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts.
  4. Sarah Porter was born about 1626 in England, and died on 16 March 1696 in Woodbury, Litchfield, Connecticut.  She married Captain Joseph Judson on 24 October 1644 in Milford, New Haven, Connecticut.
  5. Rebecca Porter was born 1628 in England and died unmarried.
  6. Mary Porter was born 1630 in England.  She married Samuel Grant on 27 May 1658.
  7. Rose Porter was born 1632 in England, was baptised on 24 June 1633 in Felsted, Essex, England, and died on 12 May 1648.
  8. Joseph Porter was born 1634 in England.
  9. James Porter was born 1638 in England and died on 27 September 1727 in London, England.  He married Sarah Tudor on 15 January 1679.  He was a merchant and colonial agent for Connecticut, in London, England.
  10. Nathaniel Porter was born on 19 July 1640.  He married Elizabeth Groves in 1673.
  11. Hannah Porter was born on 4 September 1642 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut and died on 19 September 1677 in Hatfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts.  She married John Coleman on 29 May 1663 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut.

HANNAH PORTER, the daughter of John Porter and Anna Roseanna “Rose” White was born on 4 September 1642 in Windsor, Connecticut.  She was slain by Indians on 19 September 1677 at her home in Hatfield, Massachusetts.  She married (Deacon) John Coleman, the son of Thomas Coleman, on 29 May 1663 in Windsor, Connecticut.  Hannah was the mother of six children.
Hannah Porter was married when she was 20 years old and joined her husband in Hadley, Massachusetts.  She had her first child a little over nine months later.  She was 35 years old in the fall of 1677 when, in the late morning hours on September 19th, Indians attacked her home while her husband was working in the fields.  Both she and her eleven month old baby, Bethia, were killed, one of her children was wounded, and two of her children were taken captive.  The captives were rescued eight months later in Canada.
