Wright Lineage

PREFACE
This account of the ancestry of Hannah Wright is based, in large part, on the Wright Genealogy on pages 850-853 in History of Ancient Wethersfield, Volume II,  by Henry R. Stiles, on History of the Wright Family, and The Wrights of Kelvedon Hatch, by Albert Nye.
LINEAGE
THOMAS WRIGHT, born about 1396 in White Nottley, Essex, England.  He married Agnes Hunt.
CHILDREN
  1. (Rev.) Henry, born about 1424 in Upminster, Essex, England, and died in Upminster, Essex, England.  He married Anna Whitebread in 1448.

HENRY WRIGHT, was born about 1424 in Upminster, Essex, England, and died in Upminster, Essex, England.  He married Anna Whitebread in 1448.  She was the daughter of Thomas Whitebread and Agnes Hunt.  According to The Wrights of Kelvedon Hatch, by Albert Nye, Reverend Henry Wright was descended from the Old Saxon Wryta family of Bayeaux, Normandy.

(REV. SIR) JOHN WRIGHT, born 17 October 1450 at Dagenham, Essex, England, and died 5 May 1509 at Dagenham, Essex, England.  He married Agnes ___ about 1470.  Reverend Sir John was an eminent theologian at Dagenham near South Weald, Essex, England and an advowson of Upminster Church.

  1. (Sir) John, born about 1488 at Kelvedon, Essex, England and died 5 October 1551 at Kelvedon Hatch, Essex, England.  He married Olive Hubbard on 17 March 1508 at South Weald Church, Essex, England.

(SIR) JOHN WRIGHT, born about 1488 at Kelvedon, Essex, England and died 5 October 1551 at Kelvedon Hatch, Essex, England.  He married Olive Hubbard on 17 March 1508 at South Weald Church, Essex, England. Sir John was Lord of the Manor and was known as a Patron of the Church.  Sir John purchased the manor of Kelvedon in 1538 and build Kelvedon Hall.

  1. “Elder” John, born 10 October 1510, died 10 October 1563.  He married Joan Harris on 17 November 1540.
  2. Katherine, born about 1513, died about 1595.  She married John Greene.
  3. (Lord) Robert, born 9 April 1516 at Kelvedon Hatch, Essex, England, died 24 January 1587 at Brook Hall, South Weald, Essex.  He married Mary Greene, the daughter of Richard Greene at Kelvedon Hatch on 10 September 1541.
  4. Alice, born about 1519 at Kelvedon, Essex, England, died about 1535 at Brook Hall, South Weald, Essex.  She married ___ Perkins in 1539 at Kelvedon, Essex, England.
  5. John “The Myddle,” born 19 June 1522 at Kelvedon Hatch, Essex, England, died 1558 at Kelvedon Hatch, Essex, England.
  6. John “The Younger,” born 4 May 1524 Whitesbridge, Essex, England, died 30 September 1587 at South Weald, Essex, England.  He married (1) Joan or Johanna Page 17 Nov 1540 in South Weald Church, Essex, England, and (2) Elizabeth Linsell.
  7. Elizabeth, born 11 August 1526, died in Essex.  She married Robert Shepherd.

(LORD) ROBERT WRIGHT, born on 9 April 1516 at Kelvedon Hatch, Essex, England and died on 25 January 1587 at Brook Hall, South Weald, Essex, England.  His will was dated 17 Jan 1587 and proved on 22 February 1587.  According to The Wrights of Kelvedon Hatch, by Albert Nye, “Robert was of Brook Hall (Moat House) Parish of South Weald.  Lord of the Manor of Great Little Ropers.  Also a member of Henry III’s House of Lords.”  Robert married Mary Greene on 10 Sep 1541 at Kelvedon Hatch, Essex, England.  Mary was the daughter of Robert Greene.

  1. Dorothy, born 7 November 1542 at Brook Hall, South Weald, Essex, England, and died 1553 in South Weald, Essex, England. She married John Hatch on 28 May 1566.
  2. Katherine, born 19 January 1543 at Brook Hall, South Weald, Essex, England and died in 1567 in Essex. She married William Kent on 28 November 1565 at St. Peters Church, South Weald, Essex, England.
  3. Olive, born March 1544 at Brook Hall, South Weald, Essex, England.
  4. John, born 16 Jan 1545 at Brook Hall, South Weald, Essex, England. He married Elizabeth Linsell.
  5. Thomas, born 17 August 1548 at Brookstead, South Weald, Essex, England and died on 21 October 1617 at Kelvedon, Essex, England.  He married Roberdyke Pake on 17 November 1603 in Essex.
  6. Robert, born about 1550.

  1. JOHN, born 13 September 1577 in Kelvedon, Essex, England.  He married Grace Glascock, daughter of Henry Glascock.  John Wright died on 30 May 1640 in Degenham, Essex, England.

JOHN WRIGHT, born 13 September 1577 in Kelvedon, Essex, England, married Grace, daughter of Henry Glascock, who died 1606, of High Easter Parsonage, Essex, son of John Glascock.  They lived at Brook Hall (the Moat House).  John Wright of South Weald died intestate on 30 May 1640 in Degenham, Essex, England, and letters of administration were granted in the Archdeaconry Court in November 1640 to his relict, Grace Wright (Act Book, folia 268).  Grace made her will on 25 July 1653 and it was proved the following year.  John Wright was buried in St. Peter Churchyard, South Weald, Brentwood Burough, Essex, England.

  5. THOMAS, ESQ., born 19 November at Brook Hall, Delavon Manor, Essex, England and died 21 April 1670 in Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut.  He married 91) Mary Cranbroke, in England; (2) Margaret, widow of John Elsen, in May 1647.
  6. Grace, born about 1612; died about 1648, unmarried.

THOMAS WRIGHT, ESQ., the son of John Wright and Grace Glascock of Brook Hall, South Weald, County Essex, England, was born on 19 November 1610 in Brook Hall, Delavon Manor, Essex, England.  He died in Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut.  His will is dated 21 April 1670.  He married (1) Mary Cranbroke, in England, and brought his wife and five children to the American Colonies.  He married (2) Margaret, widow of John Elsen, in May 1647.  Her will is dated 19 January 1671.
Thomas Wright, Esq. came first to Watertown, Massachusetts.  He move to Wethersfield, Connecticut about 1639.  He was recognized as a man of influence and high standing.  He served in many public offices.  His principal estate was Mannahannock Island in the Connectucut River.  It was called “Great Laughing Place” by the Indians.  He gave the northern half of the island to his son, Thomas, and southern half to his son James.

  1. Thomas, born before 1634 in England, died 23 August 1683 in Wethersfield, married Elizabeth Chittenden, 16 June 1657.
  2. (Ens.) Samuel, born about 1634 in England, died 12 February 1690 in Wethersfield, married Mary Butler of Hartford, Connecticut on 29 September 1659.
  3. (Dea.) Joseph, born 1639 in England, died 17 December 1714 in Glastonbury, Connecticut, married (1) Mary Stoddard on 10 December 1663 in Wethersfield, (2) Mercy Stoddard (sister of his first wife) on 10 March 1685.
  4. JAMES, born about 1640 in England, died 24 December 1728 in Wethersfield, married (1) Mary, (2) Dorcas Weede, the daughter of Jonas Weede of Stamford, Connecticut, (3) Mary.
  5. Lydia, born in England, married Joseph Smith.

JAMES WRIGHT, the son of Thomas Wright and Mary Cranbroke, was born about 1640 in England.  He died on 24 December 1728, at 88 years of age, in Portland, Connecticut.  He married (1) Mary, who died on 6 October 1659.  He married (2) Dorcas Weede, the daughter of Jonas Weede of Stamford, Connecticut on 20 November 1660.  She died on 24 December 1692.  He married (3) Mary, who died on 20 October 1740, in her 80th year.
James Wright was the largest landowner on the “Great Island,” — at Wethersfield, Connecticut — by inheritance and purchase.  He occupied 32 acres on the southern half of the island that he received from his father.  He moved to Middlebury, and then to Portland, Connecticut, where he was a first settler.

  3. Daniel, born 1647 in Wetherfield, died 8 June 1764, married Eleanor Benton on 24 August 1705 in Wethersfield.
  4. HANNAH, born about 1670 in Wethersfield, died 1 August 1741 in Wethersfield, married (Lieut) John Coleman, 24 April 1695 in Wethersfield.

HANNAH WRIGHT, the daughter of James Wright and Dorcas Weede, was born about 1670 in Wethersfield, Connecticut.  She died on 1 August 1741 in Wethersfield, Connecticut. On 24 April 1695, she married (Lieut) John Coleman, the son of (Dea.) John Coleman and Hannah Porter, in Wethersfield.  Hannah was the mother of eight children.
